JPEG 2000 (.jp2) thumbnails in Windows Explorer
JPEG 2000 files (.jp2, .j2k, .j2c, .jpc, .jpf, .jpm and .jpx) get real thumbnails in File Explorer with SageThumbs 2K.
What you see
- Decoding goes through the trimmed ImageMagick engine that every SageThumbs 2K install includes.
- The Explorer preview pane and Quick preview show the image large.
Limits
- The small preview inside the right-click menu skips formats that need ImageMagick and shows the file name and size instead. Their thumbnails in Explorer are unaffected.
- In OneDrive and other synced folders, files stored on the PC get thumbnails as anywhere else. Online-only files are left to the cloud app, since nothing is downloaded just to draw a thumbnail.
More you can do
- The Convert dialog writes JP2, and turns JPEG 2000 files into PNG, JPG or WebP.

Thumbnails not showing?
- Windows caches thumbnails, and a file it failed on once stays failed. In SageThumbs, Settings ▸ Advanced ▸ Rebuild thumbnail cache clears the cache and restarts Explorer.
- Make sure File Explorer's "Always show icons, never thumbnails" option is off, and that the format is ticked in SageThumbs Settings ▸ File types.
- Run
st2k doctorin a terminal. It only reads, checks the whole chain, and prints a fix under anything that is wrong.
